    SALES ENGINEERING

The 'Downsell' Maneuver: How to Profit When They Say "No"

Most salespeople are trained to handle objection, but they are not trained to handle rejection. When a prospect says, "That's too expensive" or "I can't commit to a year," the average business owner says, "Okay, thanks anyway," and hangs up.

You just walked away from cash. The goal of the first transaction is not Profit. It is Acquisition. If you can turn a prospect into a customer—even for €1—you have won the war, because you can sell to them again later.

    The Downsell Strategy

If the main engine fails, you need a backup generator. This is the Downsell. It is an alternative offer, at a lower price point or commitment level, presented immediately after a rejection.

    Case Study: The Gym Membership

A prospect walks into a gym.

    • The Pitch: "Sign up for a 12-month contract."
    • The Answer: "No, I'm not sure I'll stick with it."
    • The Mistake: Letting them leave.

The Downsell: "I understand. Why not try our 90-Day Makeover package? It's shorter term and lower risk."

The Second Downsell: "No? Okay, take a One-Week Trial pass for €20."

    The Florist's Recovery

A guy walks in to buy a dozen red roses for €50. He realizes he doesn't have the cash. Instead of letting him leave empty-handed, the smart florist offers a "Romantic Alternative" bouquet for €25.

If you save just one sale a day using a downsell, that is €8,000 in extra revenue per year.
