    BRAND STRATEGY

The 'Target' vs. 'Nike' Paradox: The Danger of Being "Good"

Why can Nike sell a pair of Air Jordan sneakers for €150? At the exact same time, a store like Target (or Dunnes/Tesco) sells an excellent imitation of that shoe for €40. The quality is similar. The function is identical. Yet Nike sells ten times more volume at four times the price.

    The Lie of "Quality"

Most Irish SMEs tell me: "We will win because we offer better quality and service." Wrong. Target offers good quality. Target offers good service. Nike wins because they have a Market Dominating Position. Nike is not selling shoes. They are selling "Athletic Status."

    The Commodity Trap

If you cannot explain why you are different, the customer has no choice but to compare you on Price. If you are an accountant, and you look like every other accountant, you are a commodity. If you are a builder, and you quote like every other builder, you are a commodity.

    The Fix: Innovate or Die

You must stake out a specific claim.

Domino's: They didn't sell "Good Pizza." They sold "30 Minutes or Free."

Starbucks: They don't sell coffee. They sell "A Third Place" between work and home.

You need to wrap your business in a unique identity. Are you the "Fastest"? The "Safest"? The "Exclusive" choice? If you are just "The Best," you are invisible.
